Amid the Black Lives Matter movement and renewed calls for police reform, we hosted a discussion between Esther Lucero, our CEO, and Brandy Grant, Director of Programming at the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, on police brutality, reform, and allyship among communities of color.
Brandy Grant was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and moved to Seattle to bring 20 years of mental health and community programming to Washington. She was sworn in, in April 2019 for the Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC). In her role at the Alliance for Gun Responsibility she is strengthening community engagement and partnerships to amplify voices and create policy and programming for further impact and awareness around civic engagement and gun laws.
Esther Lucero is Dinè and Latina and a third generation urban Indian from Colorado Springs, Colorado. A leader in national public health policy for urban American Indians and Alaska Natives, Esther became CEO of Seattle Indian Health Board in 2015 and completed a reorganization of the company by establishing a leadership team that is leading the charge toward an informed system of care that is grounded in Indigenous knowledge.
This video is the first in our series, the Solidarity Table, that centers the voices of community organizers, leaders, and members. Driven by activism and social justice, our goal is to create a platform for ally-ship among communities of color and open discussion.
